Bought this 80s Philips stereo set with some late 70s speakers. Sounds way better than I expected too, so I can finally listening to music properly.

The guy selling it was a bit of a hoarder: his whole home was filled to the brim with vintage audio, there was’t even a way to move around his livingroom freely. On the one hand it was a bit shocking, but on the other hand this must be how non-car people view our hobby too...

As he’d just picked up a box of records he even threw in a free copy of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, which was one of the records I wanted to buy anyway, so that was nice.

Nice! I’ve got a pair of late 70s Realistic Mach One speakers myself, that I got off Craigslist for $200, eight years ago now . I l ove ‘em. Anything from the 70s that’s lasted this long is bound to be high quality.

The late 70's and early ‘80's Japanese audio stuff was very good. Every company trying to outdo the others. Marantz, Technics, Etc. All good stuff.

I first tried finding Japanese stuff indeed, but in the end the price difference made me go for this set. Because Philips is Dutch people here tended to buy that, so these are still more common on the market. Luckily Philips quality was quite good as well, as they had to fight to keep market share against the Japanese

True, that’s always my reasoning when buying 70/80s stuff. Up until now it has proven true with my vintage cameras, so hope it holds for this system too

I also l ove new tech (and work in a quite high tech job), but somehow enjoy surrounding myself with analog tech that’s way older than me.

Love those old tower speakers, I’ve rebuilt two sets of them over the years. Some cheap refoam kits for the woofers, new silk dome $20 tweeters, along with new capacitors to filter the output split makes for remarkably good sounding speakers for not a lot of money.

Nice! I love old electronics like that. I went slightly older, and a lot bigger, with my vintage buy but I bet the sound yours makes is fantastic.

That is really nice, I wish I would have bought a nice 70-80s stereo a few years back when they were $20 garage sale fodder.

I didn’t (but should have) know that Philips was Dutch. Learn something every day at this bar.....

DAT SILVER takes me back. In the early 80s My parents got a fancy new Sony receiver and turntable that looked very similar. It had a VFD digital tuner readout but the bank of preset buttons had the little slide in carrier for backlight lables as was common on TVs and VCRs of the time. They also later got a really nice Technics cassette with the VFD VU meters.

I still roll a set of 70s Advent III  as my main speakers. Somehow the surrounds haven’t rotted yet.

Luckily sometimes people still sell for low prices. But they do seem to start taking off from the ‘please take this old junk out of my attic’ price range
